That's already such a great contribution, no need to tire yourself out with the rest.

Can't be arsed to name a full team but I'd definitely stick Parker and Lanzini in the middle.

Jenkinson, if you write off the start to his second season, was very good for us, and about as good as it got for us at right back. Only Tomkins serious competition. Ba just ahead of Sakho. Other than that, pretty straightforward.

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
There seem to be a lot of people confusing "best 11" with "obscure players I think were under-rated", and a lot of effort to impress by naming "forgotten gems".

You don't need to look much beyond our first 11 of last season to find the best of the Gold/Sullivan era.

Can't believe how Obiang is not mentioned more here.

Most underated and probably in our top 3 best current players list.

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
It's often said that Joe Cole's career was limited by being developed to play on the wing. I think the same is true of Noble's as a DM.

To his credit, Bilic changed that when he came in and moved him further forward and it resulted in one of Noble's better seasons.

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
Alex,

I agree. He played there for the u21s very successfully aroun the same period too, and of course under Curbs in the great escape linking up well with Tevez towards the end. Now, whether he didn't continue in that position because of the whims of subsequent managers or because he turned out to not be quite up to it, is another question. But they were without doubt his finest days.

It was also a key period for Noble imo - he played at the tip of the diamond in the more attacking role, and might have developed into more of a Lallana-type player over time. Instead he played years as a DM under Allardyce and that potential was limited.

Song in that first 6 months for us was outstanding you melt.

Payet is the first name on the teamsheet. Regardless of what has gone on when naming your team in the Sullivan/Gold era Payet would be the first name on 95% of peoples teamsheets, the other 5% would leave him out in spite of what's happened recently.

Anarchy,

Powell? The only ones I can remember were the two (brothers I think but google suggests I am wrong) who were well outside of the Gold and Sullivan era.

Kouyate over Lanzini? As the cool kids apparently say - are you ok hun?

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
Alex,

He was fucking incredible away against Chelsea with Noble, Parker, and Collison one year, 1-1 draw I think. As you say, all effort and not much discipline, but back then very few teams could cope with the energy of that midfield.

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
Behrami was a bit like a clockwork thing that you'd wind up and set off to run around for 90 minutes. He certainly wasn't capable of playing a defensive midfield role back then, as he does now. But I don't think I've seen a more aggressive and athletic winner of the ball for us, certainly before the injuries took their toll.

Re: Your best 11 in the Sullivan/Gold ownership
Bit of a funny formation in midfield, but for me..

Green

Behrami
Reid
Collins
Cresswell

Parker
Noble
Lanzini
Obiang

Vaz Te
Ba

Behrami is a bit of a cheat as although he could play right back he wasn't really very good there. I well remember his (pre Gold and Sullivan) debut for us, playing there against Wigan with Faubert in front of him, and he was awful. Ashton scored two and then went off injured again after trying to take a free kick, they may have even been his last goals for us. It was certainly the beginning of the end.

Really shows how long it has been since we've had a decent right back. I can't get onboard the retrospective appreciation for Demel, he was fairly reliable but nothing more.

In fact, while midfield places are fairly competitive, and the defence looks solid except for right back, at both ends of the pitch this discussion points up where a lot of our recent struggles have come from.

If Carroll could stay fit, he'd be a shoe-in up front. But so be it.

Some will say Tomkins ought to be in for Collins but let's face it there's a reason one of them is still at the club while the other is getting turned inside out in a dire Palace side, albeit Collins is now a long way off first choice. But he has been a great servant to the club and I actually think he's been a better player second (Gold and Sullivan era) time around.

I'm not having Upson. Not for a moment. Gutless cunt.
